ABSTRACT

Fibromyalgia continues to be one of the most challenging chronic pain conditions to evaluate and treat. This chapter first provides an up-to-date review of the etiology, prevalence, symptomatology, and medical and psychological comorbidities of fibromyalgia. It then summarizes the evidence-based treatments targeted for this population. Clinical case conceptualization based on thorough biopsychosocial assessment is then demonstrated through the lens of three widely studied and effective transdiagnostic approaches: the unified protocol for transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders; acceptance and commitment therapy; and cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia. Through discussion and case study, the chapter discusses how these approaches can be utilized to attain improvements seen in fibromyalgia pain, pain interference, sleep, mood, and quality of life.
