ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of methods commonly used for data collection and analysis in researching second language (L2) pragmatics in three areas: pragmatic production, pragmatic comprehension and perception and pragmatic decision-making processes. It presents the tendencies of data collection and analysis methods that emerged in the survey of 246 studies. The chapter highlights the major trends and issues surrounding existing research methods. The chapter explores the potential benefits of technology-based instruments in researching L2 pragmatics. L2 pragmatics research is concerned with how L2 learners develop the knowledge and ability to use various aspects of the target language pragmatics. The primary concern in pragmatic production has been collecting data that represent a real-life interaction while controlling for social variables that can affect the interaction. Pragmatic comprehension refers to understanding implied meaning, whereas pragmatic perception involves judging the appropriateness of language use in a particular context.
