ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a collection of research-based daily math “thinking-rich” routines that can be used by classroom teachers, interventionists, bilingual teachers, math coaches, special educators, teachers of English language learners, and teachers seeking to improve the mathematical competency of all students. It presents teacher-friendly examples of the routines, which teachers can understand, adapt, and easily implement. The book focuses on how students learn mathematics in a way that informs what we do in schools to improve achievement. It discusses the what, when, where, and how of doing Daily Math Thinking Routines. The book outlines the art and science of asking students questions that not only promote but also provoke their thinking. It considers problem solving as something that should happen every day. The book looks at whole-class math vocabulary routines which should be done at least once a week.
