ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at two exhibitions displaying loyalist paramilitary heritage. One is the Andy Tyrie interpretive centre on the Newtownards Road in East Belfast. It describes itself as a Loyalist Conflict Museum and tells the story of the Ulster defence association, from the early 1970s to the end of the 2000s. The other is called "Our Journey - Our Narrative" and is part of the action for community transformation initiative, an organisation that helps former Ulster volunteer force combatants go back to civilian life. Both exhibitions can be described as micromuseums, that is to say 'small, independent, single-subject museums' or, to be more specific. Based on on-site visits and interviews with staff, the analysis of the exhibitions will consider the aims of each in portraying former paramilitary organisations, the type of visitor experience they offer and the challenges they face as small-scale heritage initiatives.
