ABSTRACT

With the explosion of interest in the numinous over the past 30 years came a corresponding clinical sensitivity to these issues among a wide range of professionals, both in the social sciences and health care fields. A variety of professional organizations have developed guidelines for the systematic incorporation of numinous information in the assessment and treatment processes. For example, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA, 2017) Wellness Initiative emphasizes the importance of utilizing a holistic approach and identifies eight dimensions that should be acknowledged, including physical, emotional, social, environmental, intellectual, occupational, financial, and spiritual areas. The emphasis in the spiritual domain is on “expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life” (paragraph 5).
