ABSTRACT

This chapter explores approaches to professional development with indicators from research into what works and why in developing cooperative learning. There are a number of key considerations in planning professional development for implementing cooperative learning. The terms 'mentoring' and 'coaching' are often used interchangeably and while there is permeability between the terms, it is useful to examine the differences. Lesson Study is a professional learning process. Action research is a participatory and democratic process bringing together, 'action and reflection, theory and practice, in participation with others'. Not only is it beneficial to develop a learning community in a school to develop cooperative learning, but also it can be helpful if links are made across schools in a network. Virtual IT networks can also provide valuable support. Such support needs to be ongoing, as a cooperative learning classroom or school is always learning based on reflection and review.
