ABSTRACT

Cooperative learning and collaborative learning are often used interchangeably in schools and there is some confusion among teachers about the terms. Education for the Twenty-first century will focus on allowing students to move between workplaces and develop the metacognitive skills necessary to do this well. Twenty-first century pedagogy implies a new way of learning and teaching; a way that assists and enhances a different set of beliefs and theories more appropriate for a new century – a globalised century. Teachers will need access to resources utilising skills of higher order thinking – for themselves and their students – and the use of culturally relevant or culturally responsive pedagogy. Intercultural competence is an important Twenty-first century capability where, "intercultural competencies obviously play an integral role in learning to live together". The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
