ABSTRACT

The average height for man varies from 5′2ʺ (Indonesia) to 5′11½ʺ (Germany), and the average female height varies from 4′8ʺ (Bolivia—Aymara) to 5′7½ʺ (Dinaric Alps). Idiopathic short stature refers to a height below -2SDS based on the science of human growth and development with no evidence for any primary diseases. Little people of America defines dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition resulting in an adult height of 4′10ʺ or shorter. Dwarfism may be proportionate and non-proportionate based on stem length and length of the lower extremity. In proportionate dwarfism both the stem length, i.e., crown to rump length and length of the lower extremity are equal. In non-proportionate dwarfism, the stem length and lower extremity are unequal. Persons with dwarfism have functional limitations in overhead activities, limitation of the access to pedal for acceleration and brake. Further, they have obstacles in vision during driving, using the ATM, gas/petrol pump, and so on, “Integrated Evaluation of Disability” assigns an impairment of 1.72% for each inch of shortening from 4′10ʺ. Further, impairment of cognition, sensory-motor functions, bladder/bowel functions, heart function, pulmonary function, renal function, and limitations of joint due to skeletal deformities, and so on, derive additional impairment.
