ABSTRACT

The incidence of mental health problems, various addictions, and post-career suicides in professional cricketers has hastened the need for increased welfare support. This chapter explores the potential synergies between sport psychologists and sports chaplains for player welfare through the reflections of the co-authors working together over a period of five years in English professional cricket. Areas of reflection include the core listening skill of each professional, and the nature of the psychologist and chaplain’s unique and overlapping roles. The chapter also considers faith issues and ‘good practice’ guidelines for building and maintaining closer working relationships between psychologists and chaplains to better support player welfare.
