ABSTRACT

F. Lewins provides with a very good starting point in considering what is theory. He characterises social science research as being mainly theory testing or theory generation. The chapter outlines the most common six varieties of theory. The first variety of theory which can be considered is 'description'. A second variety of theory which can be considered is that of concepts which can be generated from the data gathered in the research. A third variety of theory which can be considered is that of categorising. A fourth variety of theory which can be considered is that of propositions. A fifth variety of theory is that of models. The sixth variety of theory which can be considered is that of typologies. The chapter provides an overview on the range of arguments which are used as justifications for the value of engaging in studies aimed at theory generation.
