ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the results of a study conducted for the degree of Doctor of Education by Dr. Sarah Ekin, under the authors' supervision in the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia. The central aim of the study was to generate theory on the perspectives of language teachers of German in Western Australia on what is an effective teacher of German. It presents a detailed introduction to the first competency, namely, the ability to motivate students. It opens with an elaboration on the nature of this competency. The emphasis placed on the importance of having a clear notion of the outcomes one should expect as a result of the existence of this competency is then considered. Secondary school teachers of German hold that for students to learn German, they need to have a willingness to learn the language.
