ABSTRACT

The subject and the light become one to create a unique and moving image. The most basic effect of lighting is the creation of dimension. The differences in tonal values are often referred to as lighting ratios. The apple is a simple sphere, and moving the light source to the left and above the camera axis creates a highlight side and a shadow side. The highlights and shadows are what give the apple dimension. Light on dark is probably the most common method for creating separation between the hero and the background. The idea is to use contrast to create the separation as the viewer “reads” across an image. Lighting to achieve drama within a photograph is a more complicated idea. The light source was moved closer to the camera axis so that less shadow was produced and the gradation between highlight and shadow is more gradual and subtle.
