ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines currere as a key concept in curriculum. William Pinar traces currere as an idea that emphasizes the lived experience of curriculum, structured by the past while focused on the future, and outlines the four-step method he devised to study it. He discusses the relationship between the lived curriculum and the planned one using the curriculum metaphor of complicated conversation. Pinar explains the implications of curriculum as verb. Pinar’s introduction to the concept of currere in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two preservice teacher educators, who further explore its relevance in teaching and learning. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
