ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines ecology as a key concept in curriculum. It engages with the notions of living organisms and their environment as a way to question where learning takes place, what is learnt, and why it matters. Rena Upitis argues for the importance of ecology as a metaphor in education, as a perspective from which to view curriculum, and as a way to think and act that integrates every aspect of humanity. This introduction to the concept of ecology in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two individuals who further explore how ecology manifests in what we do and do not teach and learn. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
