ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Nel Noddings introduces and defines ethics as a key concept in curriculum. She traces the 20th century history of education as a moral enterprise through curriculum aimed at Platonic virtues and character education, then justice and rights as put forward by Kohlberg, to care ethics. Noddings concludes the chapter with sound advice for teachers. This introduction to the concept of ethics in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two educators, who further explore its relevance in human lives. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
