ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines hermeneutics as a key concept in curriculum. It approaches hermeneutics as a methodological approach to the interpretation of human actions. The history of the concept is traced from the study of religious texts through to modern times and the interpretation of historic events. Hermeneutics is situated as a shift away from grand narratives toward a promotion of multiple perspectives, through uncovering and acknowledging the ambiguity of human existence. Hermeneutic approaches to curriculum are discussed in light of this approach. This introduction to the concept of hermeneutics in curriculum theory is accompanied by two personal reflections on the key concept that further explore the relevance of hermeneutics in human lives. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
