ABSTRACT

Chapter Four, Expanding Our Understanding of Intermodality does just that, provide further examples of the ways in which teachers create lessons which focus on the work of art under consideration through the many modes of writing, reading (literature), speaking, as well as listening, and through movement (kinesthetics). The chapter presents how to design a literature unit using the Line of Inquiry (LOI), Way In (WI), or Big Human Issue (BHI) to enhance students’ transactions with works of art. The chapter also call into questions some learning techniques which may not be as effective as students transacting authentically with writing, reading, or speaking: graphic organizers, unrehearsed public reading, plot and theme, and contextual information as enhancing meaning making of a text.
