ABSTRACT

Chapter Six, Multiple Literacies as Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in English Language Arts, by Limarys Caraballo. In the current high-stakes context of standardization and accountability, English language arts curricula are often focused on literacy skills that do not honor the interrelated nature of students’ multiple identities, languages, and literacies—particularly those of students from historically marginalized communities. In this chapter, Limarys Caraballo explains how a multiple literacies approach can help teachers create and implement curriculum that includes and sustains the cultures, languages, and literacies of all students.
