ABSTRACT
This is the first of the two chapters which comprise Part II of the book and which analyse Charles Wesley’s use of resignation in his extant poetic texts. This chapter focusses on Charles’ use of resignation in relation to Jesus. Research on this use uncovers the overwhelming soteriological emphasis of these particular texts. Within this emphasis six key theological themes are identified: ransom, ‘for all, for me, for us’, the participation of the believer, the exchange formula, sanctification, and God’s resignation in Jesus. These themes are all addressed and examined in this chapter supported by examples given from Charles’ poetic texts.
