ABSTRACT

In this paper the author analyzes current debates on ethnic and regional politics in Tanzania using the theoretical lens of a new governance perspective which is inspired by the postmodern turn which involves anti-epistemology, uncertainty of meaning, a de-centered society, anti-essentialism, and absence of universal truths and values. Given this backdrop, the author discusses the relationship between religion and ethnic politics in Tanzania, highlighting critical questions being raised about Muslim representation in Tanzanian politics.
