ABSTRACT

The latest in a series of surveys of churchgoing in London took place in 2012, enabling comparison across the years since 1979. The London Church Census of 2012 shows that the number of churches in London has markedly risen during this period. Church attendance has risen by a smaller amount on Sundays but by a larger amount on other days. London’s churches have grown dramatically more diverse ethnically and in terms of denomination. Inner London has seen the most dramatic change, whilst some of the richer suburbs have seen less growth. Other areas covered in this chapter include the age of churchgoers, the distance travelled to reach worship, the nature of London church leadership and church planting.
