ABSTRACT

Reactionary politics is on the rise across the globe. Drawing on insights from postliberalism, this chapter suggests that this rise is intricately linked to liberal pessimism as to the possibility of developing solidarity rooted in shared beliefs and practices. Originating in the Anglo-Saxon West, liberal secularism has achieved a status of global hegemony. Only by ethnographically exploring the resonance of liberal secularism in the settings in which it originates, this chapter claims, can we hope to understand its potential resonance.
