ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces postliberalism from its origins to its contemporary political variants. In particular, it emphasises the importance of transcendence and narrative in developing a shared horizon of moral responsibility. The chapter further explains the postliberal perspective that pessimism as to the possibility of shared transcendence leads to an emphasis on either the state or the capitalist market as the only means of reconciling disparate people to one another.
