ABSTRACT
How are we to understand the postliberal emphasis on transcendence and narrative in the context of an Anglo-Saxon West that is simultaneously Christian, secular and religiously plural? This chapter explains how four groups are developing and failing to develop solidarity in this messy religious and nonreligious landscape. It offers a theoretical framework of transcendence, myth and performativity, which provides the basis of analysis for the remainder of the book.
