ABSTRACT

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) has become a major, leading model of couple intervention and is the gold standard in the field in terms of outcome and process of change research, and in terms of high level and systematic intervention and training. EFT has become more and more integrated with the science of adult attachment as the science has continued to grow. In terms of generalizability, EFT has been applied to more and different populations and problems. EFT has always been used with traumatized couples where clinical problems, particularly, reflect problems with affect regulation and loss of interpersonal connection. EFT is also used more and more to address couples’ sexual problems, integrating a focus on physical connection and eroticism, usually found in sex therapy, with a focus on emotional connection and the secure connection that potentiates erotic openness and play. EFT has grown as a model, not on huge research grants or marketing expertise but on the passion of its practitioners.
