ABSTRACT

The title of this chapter comes from the concept in hypnosis of pacing the client’s breathing and then deliberately leading—changing the process to move the client deeper. In this chapter, we apply this to describing essential tools for managing the clinical process itself. We start by defining the ideal session—what it is that we would ideally like to happen within a session—and then discuss the skills and tools for doing exactly that: Techniques for building safety, not replicating the problem in the session; staying in lockstep throughout; repairing breaks in the process; and finally expanding the clients’ worlds by challenging them to step outside their comfort zones and create a deeper version of themselves.
