ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to conduct a structural analysis of the period and discusses the US foreign policy toward Turkey in the postwar period according to several themes. Post-Second World War US foreign policy toward Turkey was shaped by the very events that were also considered among the origins of the Cold War. The analysis of US foreign policy toward Turkey has been based mainly on the declarations of political doctrines and security concerns. Turkey was not just a military subject for US foreign policy; Turkey's inclusion in the postwar economic system was also essential. The chapter analyzes the development of this integral policy by explaining its political, military, and economic influence on Turkey's foreign policy choices as well as on the country's economic and political decision-making processes. While refraining from a hasty takeover, the US foreign policy was to keep its influence in Turkey and slowly but surely convince the British to accept the new status quo.
