ABSTRACT
When someone asks you ‘Is it a date?’, your answer would probably contain the pronoun ‘it’ so as to avoid repeating the words ‘a date’: ‘Yes, it is’/‘No, it isn’t’. These short answers have a special form in Swedish:
Är det ett problem? Ja, det är det. / Nej, det är det inte.
Is it a problem? Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.
Är du engelsman? Ja, det är jag. / Nej, det är jag inte.
Are you English? Yes, I am. / No I’m not.
Har han en bror? Ja, det har han. / Nej, det har han inte.
Does he have a brother? Yes, he has. / No, he hasn’t.
Vill hon följa med? Ja, det vill hon. / Nej, det vill hon inte.
Does she want to come? Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.
