ABSTRACT

By the time they get to the dermatologist, many patients with alopecia have already dealt with many obstacles. They have likely already seen at least one physician, who may or may not have known how to help them. They have polled every available resource for advice. They may have had blood tests, which led them no closer to an answer as to why they were losing their hair. They have spoken to or traded calls with several of your office staff, have obtained referrals and directions, have arranged time

off from work, and may have had to deal with traffic, parking, or public transportation. Traversing these obstacles can be very challenging, and patient anxiety is often high. This chapter provides a framework for developing an individ-

ualized approach to each patient, since each patient’s circumstances are unique. The key elements of the history and physical examination, the decision as to whether or not to biopsy, and ways in which to effectively communicate and reassure the patient are provided. It is hoped that this will increase physician knowledge and confidence in the diagnosis of alopecia, and thus increase patient education and satisfaction.
