ABSTRACT

Magnesium has a wide range of uses in industry and is also an important element in medicines. It is often used as an alloy with aluminum; the addition of magnesium lightens the weight of aluminum without negatively impacting its mechanical, fabrication, and welding characteristics. A number of publications and books have been recently published that capture the reader’s interest in using magnesium in a different avenue: as a source of power for our global need. This is detailed in the section, “An Alternative New Source of Energy to Oil.” In this chapter, current applications of magnesium are cited first. Prospective projects related to magnesium-energy applications are presented next. Magnesium as an energy carrier, a challenging field, is described along with detailed study. Possible applications in this field may tap on the current markets for magnesium. The issue of hunting for oil and gas, on one hand, against looking for magnesium as an alternative energy source is discussed.
