ABSTRACT

Given the dominant political power of the oil & gas polluter elite the low-carbon transition will only happen on the large scale and at the rapid speed that is needed if they are weakened. Chapter 5 discusses how this could happen using lesson learnt from the reduction in coal production and use in both countries. It assesses the political and economic factors that could lead to the rapid destabilisation of the oil & gas companies. There is a particular focus on the key role of public pressure in influencing whether policy makers will act to reduce the dominance of oil and gas in the economies of the US and UK.
