ABSTRACT

Sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran from 1979 until 2016 are a classic example of the use of an economic tool to achieve political objectives. This chapter examines their evolution and shows how, as they became more specific in their aim and direction, they succeeded. The analysis places the use of these sanctions in the context of economic developments in Iran and US sanctions against other Middle East states. The chapter reviews theoretical literature on sanctions and notes the importance of circumstances in the sanctioned states.
