ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three case studies relating to building information model (BIM) and quantity surveying (QS) practices with a focus on automated Quantity Take-offs (QTO), tender document preparation, and material remeasurement for final accounts. Following the QS-BIM execution plan, the chapter aims to elaborate the software solutions, practice changes, benefits, and difficulties of BIM implementation for QS based on real-life cases. Traditional PDF or CAD drawings were prevailing compelling QS to develop QS-BIMs, as well as enrich them with the appropriate information. BIM helped QS and other stakeholders in calculation, automation, communication, visualisation, and negotiation. Most stakeholders deemed the use of BIM valuable, but prudently maintained that risk management needed to be considered before its implementation could be scaled up within their respective company. BIM rollout faces a learning curve when it comes to exploring organisational structures, resource allocation, and changing process and protocol.
