ABSTRACT

Baseline, Analyze, Suggest Solutions, Implement, Check and Sustain (BASICS) is a system-level approach designed to take more time up front to involve everyone in studying and analyzing the process and set the target for the future state condition. The BASICS model yields much higher productivity in less time than traditional point kaizen events. BASICS have the added value of seeing the process from a systems perspective, which allows for very innovative solutions in healthcare that would virtually never be found using traditional point kaizen events. The main objective of creating the model was to present an easy-to-use roadmap. At the core of the BASICS model is the problem-solving method of plan–do–study–act. Problem-solving starts with understanding and being able to write down the problem or gap. Lean managers utilize the operators' talent and experience in every step of their improvement process methodology. However, many times they hear the saying: "The operators are the experts."
