ABSTRACT

To shed light on the global aspects of campaigns against fossil fuels and evaluate the applicability of argument, this chapter offers a brief overview of developments in other regions of the world. It analyzes the international dimensions of campaign against fossil fuels. International campaigns against oil and gas pipelines do criticize the fossil fuel industry, but the emphasis is almost exclusively on the local social and ecological effects of the infrastructure project. Many of the environmentalist arguments for excluding fossil fuels from development finance hinge on the promise of renewable energy. The assault led by American environmental organizations has achieved some success in reducing funding for fossil fuels, especially coal, but these victories have come at a high price. The chapter describes with a case study of the environmental campaign against the funding of coal by development agencies. It shows that many features of the American campaign are shaped by the national energy, economic, social, and political context.
