ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the paths of modernization in the Arctic to draw up a backstage context. A number of energy related natural resources, located both onshore and offshore in the High North, is presented as case studies involving innovative methods of glacial meltwater to geothermal heat, as well as wind, solar and the mainstream dynamic of petroleum resources, but the focus is on the potential for developing renewable energy and the new perspectives associated with this potential. However, the social factor represents the main drive of innovation as renewable energy projects are being implemented based upon local communities’ needs. Despite the challenges faced by the Arctic states, they have devised some of the most innovative and sustainable energy initiatives that have the potential to be replicated in other geographical areas in need of energy access. This chapter analyses the new perspectives for renewable energy in the Arctic energy context and the current energy innovations being implemented according to this new vision for the Arctic energy systems based on a more balanced approach between environment and society.
