ABSTRACT

Geothermal energy is an environmentally friendly, renewable, and sustainable energy source that has been used around the globe. The earth contains its own natural heat gradients that are accessed through drilling wells into areas of low to high temperatures. The geothermal brine contains potential thermal energy used for electrical generation or direct use purposes. The following chapter will address geothermal reservoirs, power systems, direct-use applications, and developmental processes. As well, the benefits and challenges of geothermal as an energy source will be discussed. The geothermal industry in Iceland, provides an ideal example for further development of geothermal in Arctic regions. Other Arctic related projects are touched upon.
