ABSTRACT

The paper is focused on an area rich in environmental and cultural emergencies, with a wide range of local products and an important infrastructure, but cumbersome: a 27,5 kilometers long railway line, abandoned in 1986, the Noto-Pachino line, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily.

It’ easy to combine these aspects to develop a restoration project of this railway, a project that aims to systematize all polarities along the route. Polarities that the urbanistic investigation has highlighted. The project of restoration seeks to introduce elements of research and experimentation and suggests the use of rolling stock and energies, both innovative. The project relies on inter-modality between the train and the bicycle. This one enables to penetrate the territory, starting from the different train stops and reach its splendid riches such as the beaches with unique characterizations, the marshes of Vendicari, the villa of Tellaro, the Eloro ruins, the museum of sea of Calabernardo, the Pizzuta column, the citadel of Maccari, the town of Noto and Pachino.
