ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore historical development of second-wave feminism in Turkey between 1980 and 1990 while focusing on dissent and protest PR strategies and tactics. The research is based on the textual analysis of the materials obtained from the Women’s Library and Information Center’s archives. Audience participation, special events, and publicity are the pro-active strategies that enable feminists to raise consciousness about gender discrimination and domestic violence in society and to promote a new feminist identity among the women. Protest PR strategies like embarrassment and threat are rather reactive and help reach the goal of changing discriminative norms and legislations. Although being proactive, newsworthy information strategy is also observed in protest PR. This chapter unveils how dissent and protest PR strategies and tactics intertwine and help raising public consciousness in a critical issue like feminism.
