ABSTRACT

The consequences of a change-over to electronic data processing will be considered first from the point of view of the firm and its policies. The consequences of change will always depend on the nature of the innovation and the extent of its impact on the organisation. The bank had made some systems changes but there was no extensive re-organisation of the clerical function as a whole. Bank clerks had to be trained from scratch as programmers and computer operators, while young girls straight from school were recruited to look after the ancillary equipment. The point can be made again that Royal Exchange machinists and control clerks did find that the new system had narrowed down their jobs and made them more routine. The increased need for accuracy mentioned most frequently by Royal Exchange and American Firm a clerks would appear to be a source of stress rather than satisfaction.
