ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the two principles identified in the Shingo Model: Think Systemically and Create Constancy of Purpose. They are found in the Shingo Model under the heading of Enterprise Alignment. To think systemically is to always consider the connectedness of things. Everything is part of some system, affects that system and is affected by it. The principle of Thinking Systemically is a paradigm breaker. The voice of this principle speaks to leaders, managers and associates reminding us not to act on initiatives or solve problems in isolation. Leaders set direction then continuously communicate that direction in many different ways and on every opportunity possible. Managers talk to employees every day about the purpose of the organization and help employees to see how they fit in. Few things can Create Constancy of Purpose like principles. Because principles are universal and timeless they are in fact the ultimate expression of Constancy of Purpose.
