ABSTRACT

This chapter explores many key aspects of what it means and what it takes to lead with humility. The principle of Lead with Humility is also, like Respect for Every Individual, one of the key enablers of cultural transformation. Humility brings with it teachability, and learning to hear the voice of any principle requires teachability. The humility of a leader is perhaps their most visible and impactful attribute. Leading with humility runs counter to most graduate school training and leadership courses. The leader's lack of humility always became evident and impacted the examiners just as it did the actual culture of the organization being evaluated. Artificial humility can only be acted out for so long, then inevitably something will happen and the real person is revealed. Humility that is manufactured will be tolerated by others only long enough to determine whether or not it is real. Leading with humility is indeed an ideal behavior in and of itself.
