ABSTRACT

World energy demand depends intensively on fossil fuels which are not environmentally friendly as well as limitless. Therefore, the importance of finding alternative energy sources is increasing every day. Electrospun nanofibers are widely used due to their high surface area and porosities for the improvement of energy storage devices. This review focuses on the first materials used for nanofiber membrane fabrication, followed by a detailed summary of nanofiber membrane fabrication and characterization. Literature related to nanofiber membrane energy applications are summarized in terms of fuel cells, supercapacitors, solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen storage and pressure retarded osmosis (PRO).
