ABSTRACT

In times of massive global environmental threats, like climate change, proponents of the Anthropocene often call for a global transformation towards sustainability in all societies around the world. In light of such a universalist claim, this chapter asks how voices and ideas from the Global South contribute to the Anthropocene discourse. To tackle this question, this chapter presents a review of 1,209 journal articles published between 2002 and 2016. In a first step, the article authors’ affiliations and the languages used were mapped for the complete sample. Selected articles were then used to discuss contributions from, and narratives related to, the Global South more qualitatively. In conclusion, ideas, worldviews and concepts from the Global South are rarely recognised in the Anthropocene discourse despite the concept’s global aspirations. To include these voices would allow for additional perspectives and critical reflections on the Anthropocene related to human-nature relations, power struggles and widespread technocentrism.
