ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the altruism in Pakistan and in that context reviews Akhuwat's initiatives next. Individual altruism often drives organizational altruism, while organizational altruism can be the embodiment of an individual's vision. Philanthropic giving and civil society engagement in Pakistan is well established and started becoming institutionalized under British rule with the Societies Act, 1860, and Trust Act, 1882. The Pakistan Center for Philanthropy has commissioned several reports since the benchmark study. Using a similar stratified two-stage sampling design to reach a representative sample, it interviewed 2,000 households in the Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province, in 2010. In a follow-up study by the Community Development Program, Government of Sindh and the Pakistan Center of Philanthropy, the state of philanthropy in Sindh, Pakistan's second-most populous province, was explored. In a low-middle income country like Pakistan, preventable and curable diseases are common and often known to be fatal due to a lack of affordable treatment.
