ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to trace the transformation of Siliguri from a city of migrants to a transit town opening itself to other political and economic centres across the world. With its insertion into the global political economy, the city becomes part of a mobile transnational network of circulation of labour, triggering significant churning of the population particularly in recent years. As Siliguri expands and adjoining tea gardens are fast converted into real estates, its urban landscape changes fast having its impact on both capital and labour and their spatial and ethnic configurations.
