ABSTRACT

The author describes an alternative pedagogy for art educators that focuses on local communities and ecologies as sources for content, experience, and inspiration. Consequently, education is profoundly affected by attention to both the environment and inner experiences. Graham illuminates the role of the artist/educator in broader educational contexts by using the example of a project in the Mojave Desert that brought biology, English, and design students together with an art teacher, writer, and entomologist.
