ABSTRACT

Refugees and immigrants who have fled poverty, violence, and persecution, have made their homes in cities around the United States, aided by aided by resettlement offices run by private non-profit agencies that contract with the US government, and organizations and programs developed to ease the myriad transitions and adjustments they face. The resettlement groups provide a range of services to refugees, from assisting them in finding housing and jobs, to helping them navigate banking, medical care, school enrollment, and other complexities of life in their new home (Rosenberg, 2018). This chapter addresses programs developed by four different institutions that aim to empower these individuals, by using art as a forum for expression and as a foundation to build skills and to learn about the new cultures and communities in which they live.
