ABSTRACT

The history of humanitarian action and GMH demonstrates that while some values were changed to reflect professional developments, the spirit of humanitarianism remains at the core of everything that we are doing. The proposed values-based framework is understood as a system of values governing practices in GMH which includes professional and multidisciplinary ideals, principles, and standards that are organized based on their primacy in decision-making. This approach allows setting priorities based on which decision produces the greatest good for the greatest number of persons. The post-conventional approach to ethics exponentially elevates the role of professional integrity and judgment rooted in professional competencies. Various researchers and practitioners agree that an ethical GMH provider is someone who is faithful to international humanitarian values, has knowledge of regional history and geopolitics, possesses curiosity and respect for the different ways of life in different cultures, has trust that people are basically resilient, is able to tolerate moral ambiguities, is aware of their own limitations, and reaches out for help when needed.
