ABSTRACT
Humanitarian principles serve as an aspiration and the moral compass for all humanitarian actors. They set ideals for the profession and provide the meta level of reference in navigating professional dilemmas. Their aspirational role, however, is not easily translated into operations. Furthermore, confusing ideals with operational guidance may lead to problematic outcomes, like “humanitarian military intervention” where humanitarian ideals are used to justify military interventions.
